Throw the Ultimate Anti-BBQ Fourth of July Soireé

Claim your independence from the grill and go full-on Girls’ night

Peer pressure, be damned—the classic Independence Day family cookout can be a sweaty, messy drag. Our suggestion for your long-weekend plans? Grab your close friends, ditch the fireworks crowds, and celebrate America's birthday grown-up style under the open sky (plastic flags and propane tanks not included).

Tip #1: Set the Scene

A touch of the Old World: String bistro lights for an intimate ambiance, and combine store-bought cut flowers with foraged greenery from the yard to create wild, sprawling centerpieces that will look gorgeous indoors once the holiday is over. Bud vases mixed in with low glass cylinder vessels create slight height differences without blocking guests' views.

Tasteful, not tacky: Lean into a red and white color scheme for a subtle nod to the holiday that doesn't look like Uncle Sam's workshop. Murano glass tumblers, linen napkins, and a gorgeous embroidered tablecloth feel sumptuous, even if all you're serving are watermelon slices and charcuterie.

Tip #2: Set the Table

Take-out for the win: Long weekends are made to be enjoyed, not labored over. And do your girlfriends really want to watch you sweat over a hot grill (it would be kinda funny, but still)? Ditch the tongs and opt for delivery from your favorite restaurant so you can actually relax. Still break out your nice china, for balance of course!

Signature cocktail: Create a signature cocktail and set out fresh fruit garnishes. We like something simple like an spiked strawberry lemonade or a white wine spritzer, both of which can be easily be made non-alcoholic for those not imbibing. Make a large batch so guests can fill their own (very cute) glasses.

Tip #3: Set the Mood

Superlative place cards: Your guests will feel special and known with customizable "superlative" place cards from Dear Annabelle. Better yet, have people fill out the card for the person seated next to them. It's a funny exercise if everyone is acquainted, and an easy conversation starter if you're introducing new friends.

Sights and sounds: Unpopular opinion: Not all summer parties require yard games. All you need for our version of a July 4th celebration is your friends outside, the kids in bed, and the perfect playlist as the soundtrack to your night (may we suggest this ZF-curated collection?). Snap some photos of your impromptu dance party, and send guests home with the Polaroids as a favor.
