Cavernous to Cozy
how we brought warmth to a cold, expansive family room
How it started
One of the largest rooms in this Arlington new build, the family room was spacious and updated, but lacked any personality. The dark wood floors and sterile white walls made the space feel more like a doctor’s office than a place for our client’s young family to gather for movie night. Our challenge: maintain the roomy footprint but bring in the warmth and comfort.
Laying it all out
First up: the white window and door frames were replaced with steel to introduce a new material and create interest against the light walls. Light oak floors were installed throughout the home, which are decidedly less stark and bring in some much-needed texture and movement.
To maximize seating and make the room feel well-appointed, we designed a custom L-shaped sectional upholstered in a sturdy green velvet. A sofa table brings the gathering space closer to the center of the room, creating a cozy, ensconced feeling, and the organic shape of the coffee table and sherpa lounge chair add softness.
Finishing Touches
Textiles and accessories make this space the relaxing, snug family hub it was meant to be. Ivory linen curtains flank the steel-cased windows, a butter-yellow flatweave rug demarcates the seating area, and large, lush plants blur the line between indoor and outdoor. Earth tones reign throughout—olive green, walnut, cream and rust work together to create a nature-inspired oasis for lounging.
