There are few things more jarring, more earth-shatteringly sad, than overhead light. If this sounds dramatic, it’s only because we’ve hit the stage of winter that’s just, well, upsetting. Freezing, cloudy days, sunlight slipping away long before dinner, and the glimmer of the holidays behind us.

So what’s a vibe-loving, mood-setting design enthusiast to do? “Table lamps are the easiest way to add soft but useful light to your space without the commitment and cost of something like overhead dimmers or hardwired sconces,” says Zoe. We’re giving you options for every room—with styling suggestions—from budget friendly to totally luxe.

Living room

Throw a funky lamp on a pedestal table in the corner of your living room for a more layered, intentional look—it reads less “dorm room” than a floor lamp. A bold selection also serves double duty as a piece of art.

dining room

We’re all for candlelight at your dinner party…but the actual light put off by those flames? Not so helpful. Provide more light for your guests (and make any dining room feel fancier) by flanking a sideboard with a pair of lamps. Extra style points: emphasize the symmetry of the lamps by choosing a base with a fun shape, or go classic with something tall and slim.

Kitchen

Yes, we know this backsplash ledge only has room for a candle—but wouldn’t it also be cute with a lamp? Go full Nancy Meyers in the kitchen with the soft glow of a small lamp on the kitchen counter. Keep prep space clean with a cordless option.

bedroom

Layer bedside sconces with a pretty decorative table lamp for extra light when needed. You can also place a large-ish lamp with a fabric shade on your dresser for an artful moment that provides lots of diffused light—and makes getting dressed less painful on cold, dark mornings.

STUDY

Don’t sacrifice beauty when selecting task lighting! Look for an interesting base or bold, fun colors (we love primary colors!) to bring energy to your workspace. We also endorse a classic dome shape for a desk lamp—Mad Men vibes, anyone?
