A Very Loeffler Randall Kitchen

Breaking down a fashion mogul-worthy kitchen in the hamptons

DESIGNER Meet-Cute

It’s a tale as old as time: two business owners go from acquaintances to creative collaborators over the course of an industry dinner. OK—maybe it’s not that common, but our partnership with Loeffler Randall founder Jessie Randall felt so natural, it must have been meant to be. Even better—Jessie’s textile collection with Temple Studio and the opening of ZF’s New York office coincided with the timing of the renovation. Here’s how we made the space a bright, playful hub to be enjoyed by the designer’s family of five for years to come.

Making a Plan

Our design needed to embody Jessie’s unapologetically feminine aesthetic and serve the functional needs of her family. Besides giving an English, cottage-core vibe, installing open shelving in the main cooking and dining area allowed easy access to much-used cookware and favorite ceramics, while floor-to-ceiling cabinetry on the opposite wall outfitted the kitchen with plenty of closed storage for more unsightly items (see: dog bowls, brooms). A supersized island gives plenty of surface area for food prep and entertaining.

Setting the Mood

We went through many color and pattern combinations, taking cues from Jessie’s latest collection, and kept coming back to blues and greens for their crispness. Copper and brass accessories, plus yellow vintage chairs and tabletop accoutrements in the dining area warm everything up, and mixed materials keep the space feeling textured, not clinical.

Namely, custom zellige floor tiles live side-by-side with white oak, a marble counter-turned-backsplash bumps up against Jessie’s own watercolor floral print on the walls, and whimsical details like scalloped trim on the island add texture. The color palette is fresh, with hardy natural materials making it all feel grounded, not precious, and speaks to Jessie’s creative sensibilities.

The results

The colors, materials, and selections in this kitchen give it a sense of place and reflect its occupants. It feels right at home in the Hamptons, but is not at all thematic; it is fiercely whimsical yet laid-back; and, like Jessie, it exudes a love of craft without looking like arts and crafts. (Disclaimer: Jessie is an amazingly talented crafter and sewed the banquette slipcover using a bedspread she owned. Goals!)

It should come as no surprise that we struck the perfect balance of quaint and sophisticated working in collaboration with Jessie—a master of color and pattern mixing with a strong design perspective (we love a girl who knows what she wants).
